...Patten sailed late in March on the "Seneca," whose duty is to patrol the southern limits of the ice fields and to warn steamers of any danger. He served as meteorologist in the North Greenland expedition of Commodore Peary in 1893-94, and in the Wellmann polar expedition five years later.
