Students have used the facility since it was built in 1960 and have shared the Mainstage with the American Repertory Theater since the company moved to Cambridge in 1979. Before 1960, students could use a space located where Grendel's Restaurant is now and Sanders Theater. In addition to the Mainstage, the Loeb has an Experimental Theater which hosts only student shows and the Agassiz Theater across the street is another performance space available mostly for orginal works...

Winthrop Park, on JFK St. in front of Grendel's restaurant, originally served in 1631 as Newtown Marketplace. In the early 1800s, it was converted into a park. By late September of 1986, the park, which has since degenerated into a mass of weeds and a haven for street people, will be completely relandscaped, said Kitty Dukakis, director of the Public Space Partnership project at the Kennedy School and wife of Massachusetts Gov. While you probably first think to head for Grendel's or the Filly, there's nothing wrong with the bars and cafes that Harvard students overlook. For some reason, certain restaurants attract native or immigrant Cantabrigians instead of students, who don't frequent them when given a choice. But--with all due respect--these eating places are still in business without heavy Crimson patronage, so they must be doing something right...
