Earlier this year Canadian singer-songwriter-pianist Kreviazuk bested Celine Dion and Alanis Morissette to win the award for Female Artist of the Year at the Junos, the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys. Given that Americans tend to follow the Junos about as closely as they follow the Grey Cup, Kreviazuk's big win caused nary a ripple in the States. However, her latest CD, just released in the U.S., does merit attention. Her songs are often confessional in tone, but she never lets emotion overwhelm her melodies. She certainly deserves to be more than Canada's secret...
...been a monster few months, what with all the meetings he's been taking. Winkler has talked to Brillstein-Grey, the producers of The Sopranos, about creating a television show; hung with Ron Howard in the Grinch's cave on the set of How the Grinch Stole Christmas; and listened to a pitch from some folks at Universal who are interested in having him make a film based on his characters. You don't need much of an idea for a six-minute show...

It will be interesting to see if McCain--like a defeated Reagan in 1976--can achieve his ultimate goal of moving politics in general (but more specifically the Republican party) away from its clubby and exclusive structure, or whether this very structure, personified by the grey and plodding personality of Bush, will overwhelm his popular calls for reform...
...Unshaded rallied around the last turn and slaughtered the field down the stretch, winning by a good 10 lengths. As he pulled away and I stood shouting with pure joy at the wall of TVs, I noticed that just one other man was making noise--a grey-haired black man with a Caribbean lilt was calling out for Unshaded, too. When it was all over, he turned to me and drawled, "Easy, easy." Behind me, a 60-something veteran from Eastie patted me on the shoulder and smiled, "Good work." Unshaded paid $15.40 for a $2 win ticket...
