...calling for an appropriation of one hundred million dollars to aid the struggling farmer, Senator Norris is making his final fanfare before his voluntary resignation takes effect. His somewhat turbulent and unrestrained spirits have long been as wood alcohol to the conservative senators, and their grief over his departure will be tempered by a feeling of relief. Whether or not Senator Norris's measure is passed, the ship subsidy, abandoned on its shelf, is evidence enough of the success of the progressives' efforts...

...whole, but such is not the case. Andreyev was fortunately gifted with a unique sense of humor--almost Rabelaisian at times, and this flashes cheerfully forth at opportune moments. More than this; it never enters a really critical situation nor spoils a perfectly rounded and intensely dramatic picture of grief. Andreyev's humor is under control at all times. In his use of symbolism he is elusive to an almost irritating point, and then again he will be as clear as the boldest realist...

...curtain speech, "She sha'n't, she sha'n't, she sha'n't", at the end of Act Two is an excellent example. Without exception however, the cast rendered their parts well. Miss Cleveland was occasionally unconvincing and Mr. Turner's Romeo-like sobbing under the stress of grief was a bit absurd. But these are minor points. If the Jewett Company never dropped below the level of their current production, we should have little cause for complaint...

...Many believe that Japan is now free to reap the fruits of her power in the Far East. It is not true! That nation in the future daring to brave the storm of world opinion will surely come to grief. Condemnation at the hands of all mankind is what made Germany sick at heart; it is what will bring France to terms; and it will have its influence on Japan. Universal censure is sufficient to quell the proudest nation, and Japan will soon vacate Siberia and conform to world opinion...
