From her sobbing, you'd have thought state child welfare agents had just removed adopted children from Ellen DeGeneres's home. But the buckets of tears the celebrity comic shed on her syndicated television talk show on Tuesday were for her dog - a Brussels Griffon terrier that a pet adoption agency had just repossessed because DeGeneres broke the agency contract and gave the canine, Iggy, to another family. ...exactly what I feel like telling DeGeneres and her dog adoption agency this week. I report on Florida and Latin America. The former has one of the worst child welfare agencies in the nation; the latter is a region where most kids wish they lived as well as Brussels Griffon terriers do in this country. So yes, it concerns me when I realize that we handle the adoption of animals with more care and love than we manage the placement of abused children in foster homes; or that people like Leona Helmsley leave millions to pets in their wills...

...African griffon that escaped from the National Zoo, the male vulture has eluded all attempts of capture. Though zoo officials insist that his tastes run to large dead rats and not small live children, wary citizens are not amused. The real worry is over the country's image. So far, the big bird has confined his flight pattern to the northwest section of the city where he often perches atop the National Cathedral like a gargoyle. Imagine the photographs in every newspaper in the world if he settled down to brood atop the Capitol dome or on the White...

...such symbolic creatures as the Basilisk, a remote cousin of Medusa, which kills with its stare. Closer to home is the Pennsylvania Squonk, which dissolves in its own tears when captured. There is also that symbol of incongruity-or sheer perversity -the Hippogriff. It is half horse and half griffon. But that is only half of it; the griffon itself is already half eagle and half lion...
