...veteran director, Yuri Grigorovich, 60, has a new generation of dancers to show off. Only a handful of the principals on the company's 1979 visit returned, including two senior ballerinas, Natalya Bessmertnova (Grigorovich's wife, who was sidelined almost at once by a leg injury) and Lyudmila Semenyaka. Equally important, after 23 years at the helm, Grigorovich is presenting his finished vision of what the world's largest and most celebrated ballet company ought...

The Soviets have also approached Cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, Novelist Vasily Aksyonov and Theater Director Yuri Lyubimov. Grigorovich noted that there is a new "atmosphere of openness" in the Soviet Union. Said he: "We now have a wise leader who is loved by the whole country...

...pair appear to be basking in Grigorovich's good graces, as well as enjoying the blessing of Plisetskaya. Dedicated and rather conservative, they remain apart from the controversies raging within the company. Says Gordeyev: "Our lives, after all, revolve around the ballet, our art." It will be a good thing for the Bolshoi if they, and dancers like them, can keep it that...
