...massive Spanish oaks toppled at their roots and scattered reminders of the city's former self--a cookbook open to a recipe for ham croquettes, strings of Mardi Gras beads. What little life remains in New Orleans is largely devoted to counting the dead, a task so vast and grim that even the city's coroner, Frank Minyard, doesn't hazard a guess at what lies beneath the receding waters. "We don't really know what's in the houses," Minyard says, sitting on an overturned fishing skiff in the shadow of the Superdome. He stares down an empty street...

...aftermath of Hurricane Katrina has been grim. Decaying human bodies float in the heavily polluted water that has inundated the streets of New Orleans, a once-vibrant city. "Fast-food place," the teller deadpans. "They serve those little square burgers." Miller (The Human Stain) carries the lead role with grim charisma, like a jailbird Jack Bauer. If anybody had told me that engineers were stone-cold badasses with the fighting and scheming skills of a black ops agent, I would have seriously reconsidered my college major...

...role of Islam and the question of federalism-remained unresolved Monday evening. Nonetheless, by 8:30 p.m. in Baghdad Shi'ite legislators were saying a draft was ready. As news of the possible draft trickled out, Shi'ites celebrated in the streets of Najaf and Sunni negotiators held grim press conferences. At 11:40 p.m., the drafters sent a document to parliament that with the issue of federalism dangling and the Iraqi National Assembly will attempt to forge a consensus among the committee members over the next three days...
