Although they are ostensibly “fairy tales,” the stories of the Brothers Grimm are often comically inappropriate for children. The German brothers removed much of the overt sexuality from their retellings of traditional folk tales, but they seemed to have a soft spot for dismembering their younger characters and feeding them to the wolves. Stories by the Brothers Grimm are not as kid-friendly as children’s books perhaps ought to be to the modern eye. Mutilation, murder, cannibalism, and cruelty mark the tales, making for somewhat scarring bedtime stories. 1. ...Watching this rough sketch of a better movie, I thought of an ideal director for The Golden Compass: Terry Gilliam, the wildly imaginative Monty Python alumnus who's equally at home in fractured fairy tales (Jabberwocky, The Brothers Grimm) and the voluptuous visualizing of otherworldly dictatorships (Brazil). But Gilliam is a handful for studio heads; he has a high ratio of aborted projects. To hire him would have taken balls on New Line's part, and quite possibly an financial death wish...
