Cocteau's movie is the sort of dream you would have if you fell asleep with your head on a deluxe illustrated edition of Grimm's tales. It is perhaps the most sumptuous and satisfying version of a fairy tale ever put on celluloid, candy for the eyes and a banquet for the aesthete. Above all, it is a swooningly romantic film graced with many visual miracles. And, like love, "Beauty and the Beast" is a dream from which you never want to wake...
...raised to be charming, not sincere," says Cinderella's Prince to the Baker's Wife. It is an apt description of this production of Into the Woods, Stephen Sondheim's musical valentine to the Grimm Brothers' fairy tales. The competent cast does a good job with the funnier first act. But especially in the inherently weaker second act, the actors too often seem lost in pro forma direction and overwhelmed by the pit orchestra from hell. There are saving graces--the well designed set and scene-stealing cow are two examples--but John Weinstein's production of Into the Woods...
Another recent addition is Mike Peters' "Mother Goose and Grimm." Peter is a solid cartoonist known not only for this strip, but also for his work as a political cartoonist, often seen on the Perspectives page of Newsweek. Although he is not the greatest talent ever to grace to medium, he produces consistently good work, despite being occassionally tasteless, in both his daily and his political cartoons...
...Grimm, the rather deranged Old Yeller (I'm referring to the pre-rabies Yeller of course) has done one too many "fire hydrant" jokes for my tastes, but he's weird enough to like. The strip alternates between one shot gags and storylines, the one shot gags often being funnier. A recent "Soup of the Day joke" involving some confusion between they day (Wednesday) and the soup, was stupid, but funny, which is perhaps a good way to summarize the strip...
Buffalo's equivalent to Jacoby, Bostic and Grimm are center Kent Hull, left guard Jim Ritcher and left tackle Will Wohlford, who have played together since 1986. Hull has been an All-Pro two straight years, Wohlford was a Pro Bowler last season and Ritcher made it this season for the first time in his 12-year career...
