...Bosnia, Europe's bloodiest conflict since the Second World War, has come to a halt. As many as 200,000 people have been slain in this brutal conflict, and two million more have lost their homes. Even more disturbing than these grim statistics is the character of the brutalies of the war. Systematic executions of civilians, mass rapes and concentration camps--atrocities that the continent had hoped it had left behind forever--belied the west's hopes for a brighter future after the Cold War. Giving for "human services," the category most closely associated with poverty work, dropped 6%. A poll by Independent Sector found that voluntarism, which also saw a boomlet in the late '80s, declined 5% in 1993 from 1991. In the same poll, 73% of respondents worried about having enough money...
...When Night is Falling" is a deceptively grim name for a film that so magically explores the triumph of desire and true love. Written and directed by Patricia Rozema ("I've Heard the Mermaids Singing"), the movie manages to fuse the themes of Christian belief and homosexual desire in a refreshingly honest tale of attraction and awakening...
