...Rice and Abbas both looked grim as they exited their afternoon meeting in Ramallah. A presidential adviser told TIME that Abbas had rebuffed Rice's pleas that he resume negotiations with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, broken off as the Palestinian death toll mounted during Israeli ground and air attacks in Gaza. Israel launched its operation in retaliation for a shower of long- and short-range rockets from Palestinian militants...

...builds tension and suspense to the point where it quite sufficiently replaces extraneous dialogue. Intimate interior scenes are spliced with establishing shots that show the sky in fast-forward, the clouds moving rapidly over the castle and its walls, as though the film is moving towards an inevitable and grim ending. But despite the film’s dark outlook, it does not drag. Instead, “The Other Boleyn Girl” darts forward with the energy of Anne’s schemes and her family’s ambitions. Many of the scenes are short but pregnant...

An Army report on TBI released in January also offered a grim assessment, finding "no specific standards" for dealing with the TBI problem, "major gaps" in coordinating care and "no medical-provider core competencies." Now the Army is rushing to catch up, setting up screening tools and treatment plans to deal with TBI and a "center of excellence" dedicated to the challenge...

...With its grim scenes of privation, corruption, rights abuse and social stratification, Chettri's depiction is one that holds enduring relevance for many Nepalis. They are, of course, his intended readership, but that means that the local color Chettri paints with can sometimes be disorienting, if not frustratingly inaccessible, for a foreign reader. Certain domestic images are familiarly rustic - there are granaries and millstones, and whitewashed homes with butter churns, milk pails, earthen hearths and chaff-filled pillows. But other features, particularly indigenous flora, are harder to visualize, even with translator Michael J. Hutt's detailed endnotes. Bhorla, angeri leaves...
