...striking example of the contemplative in a modern situation is provided by the "Convent of Atonement," founded four years ago at Dachau. The building itself is prisonlike, but only to preserve the grim atmosphere of the demolished concentration camp that once stood near by. Inside, twelve Carmelite nuns pray almost continuously for the souls of all who were martyred at Dachau. They are, in fact, a part of the Dachau tour-"a permanent witness to the crimes there," says Mother Gemma, the convent's superior...

There is nothing innocent about Melvin Laird. The sleek, expensive wardrobe, the thin cigar, the grim scowl when offering some dire pronouncement, the somehow roguish smile when lighthearted, make him easy to caricature, easy to suspect of ulterior motives. As a Congressman, he could be sly in good causes and in partisan ones. When he overthrew Charles Halleck as House minority leader, he managed to create the impression that he and Gerald Ford had split the rebel forces. Many of the diplomats argued that the decline in combat signaled a favorable response from Hanoi to U.S. troop withdrawals and meant that there would soon be progress in the deadlocked Paris peace talks. But the combat commanders contended that the enemy was using the pause only to prepare for a new offensive. Last week the Communists apparently settled the argument...
