Private Mo'allem, 26, is having difficulty with the push-ups, but he is proud nevertheless. "Two weeks ago, I could hardly do five," the Pashtun says with a grin. "Now I'm up to 25." But he had better not bad-mouth privates from other Afghan ethnic groups as they all train together under U.S. Green Berets commissioned to create the new Afghan national army. The penalty for ethnic slurs is 50 push-ups. But it's still possible to get away with a sniping remark now and then. The Americans need a troop of translators to tell what...

...Chicks called in Maines' dad, steel-guitar legend Lloyd Maines, to produce the tracks, and then, just to push Sony to DefCon 1, they shopped the material to other record companies. "We came very close to signing with another label," says Maguire with a sly grin. "I think that's when they realized, 'These girls are serious.'" ...Tempt Fate," Crumb has abandoned the rich blacks that characterized this part of his career in favor of a crosshatching technique that captures every ripple of flesh and clothing. "Fate" tells the story of how a playmate accidentally smashed Crumb's mouth, leaving him with an absurd, gap-toothed grin all through adolescence. Not so funny? Wait till you see. Crumb's willingness to show himself in the most unflattering way turns the pain into humor...

...starred as an emotionally stunted man who so badly wants to reconnect with a childhood friend that he stalks him. In this year's teen comedy Orange County, he was an unctuous, semiliterate English teacher. In The Good Girl, he's a born-again security guard with a crooked grin and a suspiciously relentless evangelism. ("I'm not a pagan, but thanks anyway!" he says when co-workers wish him a happy Halloween...
