Bird objects that her adversaries are doing more than ringing doorbells. "They are pushing emotional buttons," she complains. Two other liberal supreme court justices, Joseph Grodin and Cruz Reynoso, are also under conservative pressure this year, although polls show that both of them are faring better than the chief is. Bird's backers charge that many of her opponents are merely using the death-penalty issue as a red herring to achieve a new majority on the seven-judge court, one that would be more sympathetic to business interests in civil cases. The Bird majority has supported tenants and favored...
MIDNIGHT RUN. A cross-country buddy movie may hold little promise, but Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin hold this one together...
...lucked into a lulu. He plays Jack Walsh, an ex-Chicago cop who is now earning a perilous living in Los Angeles as a bounty hunter, returning bail jumpers to their bondsmen. It looks like an easy $100,000 when he is engaged to pick up Jonathan Mardukas (Charles Grodin) in New York City and return him to Los Angeles before his bail must be forfeited. There's Mary Gross, for example, Donna Dixon and Charles Grodin. Grodin, actually, pulls off what seems like a stellar performance in comparison, but it's lost amidst the stale jokes and valium-inspired acting perpetrated by his cohorts and the rest of the cast, unknown actors who are destined to remain...
