...Dave Grohl is on a roll: not only has he been drumming with the Queens of the Stone Age and finally released the final Nirvana album, he is fronting one of the most reliable and melodic rock bands known to man. Though album opener and lead single “All My Life” is clearly informed by grunge’s grimy sense of grievance, Grohl’s voice is distinctly smoother than Cobain’s, at least until he looses his trademark, teeth-baring howl. One By One is a rock album far more than...

Emancipation broke out last week when COURTNEY LOVE settled her lawsuits with the Universal Music Group. The label let Love out of her contract, and she agreed to let UMG release previously unheard songs by Nirvana, the band comprising her late husband Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and DAVE GROHL. Grohl heads the band Foo Fighters, whose new album, One by One, will be out on Oct. 22; he spoke with TIME's Josh Tyrangiel...

Seems the Widow Cobain is being sued by Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, who want her to have no say in the band's affairs. The two are fed up with Love's attempts to block release of a greatest- hits CD. So Courtney went straight to the fans. "Kurt Cobain was Nirvana," she wrote, and said she represents him. Grohl and Novoselic released their own missive, saying Love...

...approach to making music. As a child, Cobain insisted on taking guitar lessons and practiced diligently despite his later rehearsed claims to journalists that he disliked practicing and authority. Upon Cobain’s insistence, Nirvana went thorough a bevy of drummers before accepting the talented Dave Grohl as a permanent member, but was talking of firing Grohl towards the end of the band’s existence as the drummer tried to incorporate songs he had written into Nirvana’s sets. And despite the apathetic grunge prototype which Cobain attempted to purvey to his fans, he actively...
