...million budget; it's the most expensive new movie since Avatar, and Disney probably spent another $100 million or so to advertise it. The Burton picture is unlikely to come near the $2.5 billion global gross of James Cameron's epic, which become the all-time top grosser in Energizer fashion, by just going and going and going. Alice got so-so reviews from critics, but it achieved a healthy A- rating from Cinemascore's poll of people who'd just seen the movie; and it should hang on through spring break until another 3-D release, the DreamWorks animated...
...drop from the previous weekend was its steepest yet, but that's still minuscule compared with most movies. It also has a huge female fan base, as did Titanic, which TBS, in its own canny counterprogramming, is showing opposite the Super Bowl. Avatar is the all-time top grosser (in current dollars), it's still No. 1 worldwide, and it looks to stay strong through this year's Oscar bash (which is four weeks from today), where it will be a prime contender for Best Picture, Best Director and a slew of technical prizes...
...more barrier - his own Titanic - between Avatar and the all-time box office record. (The usual advisory: as ticket prices keep rising, inflation makes a mockery of "all-time" figures. In real dollars, according to a Box Office Mojo chart, Avatar is currently only 36th all-time. The top grosser, Gone With the Wind, earned three times as much in theaters as Avatar has so far.) ...year got off to a good start for Hollywood in Bollywoodland. As expected, the global success of James Cameron's Avatar is also playing out in India: it's slated to become the biggest Hollywood grosser of all time in the country. The 3-D extravaganza, also released in 2-D and dubbed in three local languages, has already grossed $15 million across the country, and is expected to edge out Columbia Pictures' doomsday epic 2012, which has made $20 million since its opening on Dec. 18. What's more, in a rare show of heft, the film continues...
...bang-for-a-buck category, the phenomenon remains The Blind Side, the sports-inspirational drama starring Sandra Bullock. Still in the top seven after eight weeks of release, the movie has now earned $219.2 million on a $29 million budget. It's now the all-time top grosser in the based-on-a-true-story genre (unless you count The Passion of the Christ). At the moment it trails only E.T., the first Narnia saga, New Moon, Twister and My Big Fat Greek Wedding among movies with a woman as the top-billed performer - and Bullock is the only lead...
