...Grossman's "The Doubting Harry" [July 23]: My generation is plugged into iPods, phones and Facebook yet disconnected from everything but apathy. Harry Potter is a modern reminder that teenagers are capable of more than what our materialistic society tells them they are. In her series, Rowling brings ideals and virtue to Harry's tortured and disillusioned realm. Perhaps by not including religious overtones, Rowling is both reflecting the world's current secularism and transcending it with a simple concept: love...
...Thanks to Lev Grossman for pointing out that newspapers and magazines used to print poems on a regular basis. From my experience as a small-press publisher, I can guarantee there would be no shortage of submissions if this early-American practice were revived. (Kudos to Garrison Keillor for reading poems on NPR.) In this troubling yet promising new digital age, perhaps some of Ruth Lilly's philanthropy could be used to pay the poets a little royalty-like the one their songwriting cousins get-if they are granted publication in places like TIME. ...High Res In his review of the movie 300 [March 19] Lev Grossman wrote, "The Spartans were sick, scary fighters, brutally trained from childhood, the ancient equivalent of special forces." He should have stuck to the subject of his review without making backhanded insults about members of the armed forces. ...disagree with Lev Grossman's hesitation to call the iPhone revolutionary because "it won't create a new market or change the entertainment industry the way the iPod did." The iPod wasn't the first portable MP3 player, and iTunes wasn't the first MP3 computer jukebox program. They were simply the best. I didn't buy an MP3 player until the iPod, and I didn't use an MP3 jukebox before iTunes. Guess what? I don't own a cell phone, but as soon as I can almost afford an iPhone, I'll buy one. It isn't just...
