Sensing the shift at ground level, a few black leaders are getting onboard. Seven years ago, Polly Williams, a Democratic state legislator in Wisconsin, set in motion the process that brought Milwaukee the nation's first publicly financed voucher system. Earlier this year, when the Texas state legislature came within one vote of establishing a publicly funded voucher program, the supporters included Ron Wilson, a black Democratic legislator from Houston. In Philadelphia, the logic of vouchers has hit Dwight Evans, a black state legislator who plans to run for mayor in 1999 and who has his own poll that shows...
...enduring symbol of flyboy coolheadedness under pressure, broke the sound barrier again, in an F-15. It was a farewell sonic boom for the 74-year-old, who has retired from military flying. "I just decided to go out on top, rather than wait for some doctor to ground me," he said. Not that grounding would be all bad. After the first few scenes, Roulleau's and Clamence's back-and-forth arguments grow repetitive, leaving the audience with the feeling that not much new ground is being covered. Similarly, the condensed performance of Hamlet that the players provide seems at times unnecessary: though elegantly presented (with notable performances by Ahana Kalappa '01 as Gertrude and Jay Chaffin '00 as Laertes), it perhaps presumes too much ignorance of the plot on the audience's part. But whether seen by a Shakespearean novice...
