...early last week and decided to bring it to the Faculty after dockets for the meeting had been printed and mailed. More Faculty members would have come if they knew Dow was going on the agenda, but most of the additional votes would probably have been against postponement. The group that did vote was closely enough split on the resolution that some, including its author Zeph Stewart, think it would have passed if resolution for postponement had set a date instead of leaving it open-ended...

Despite the risks, it can be immensely profitable. Adman Marion Harper Jr. became head of McCann-Erickson in 1948 at 32, spun the outfit into the vast Interpublic Group (advertising, public relations, market research) and racked up billings of $700 million a year by last fall. When Interpublic went deep into debt, he was eased into a powerless chairmanship (TIME, Dec. 15). But when he was eased out altogether two weeks ago, Harper was not exactly out of pocket. At the same time the department's new senior conference courses promise to become the acceptable alternative the HPC requested for seniors who don't want to write theses. Hopefully the department will give the same serious attention to other HPC recommendations--altering the form of the senior thesis, changing sophomore tutorial to a half course for credit, and eliminating or deemphasizing senior generals...
