...built a notorious reputation on its purposely infantile attitude and a somewhat haphazard fusion of riot grrl and disco-pop. With this new album, the band manages to accomplish what few expected, filing away the childlike antics and eschewing the rough-hewn punk aesthetic for more complex arrangements, thus fashioning a mature update of their distinctive sound. Whether they are ultimately successful, however, is less certain...
Josie and the Pussycats combines the fast, furious feel of a garage-band single with the frenetic kinesis of a music video. The film updates the comic of the same name, tracking grrl-band Josie and the Pussycats as they get caught up in success. The movie’s main target of attack is mass consumerism (boo Abercrombie!), but it also gets in smart jibes on boybands (the show’s spoof boyband, Du Jour, has a hit single named “Backdoor Lover”), “Behind the Music” and other aspects...
...Land has been airing a lot of old Angels episodes. I hadn't seen one since childhood. So the other day I tuned in, curious to know whether my liberation memories would match up with the actual product, especially now that I have de Beauvoir and Ferraro and riot grrl under my belt. On their last album, The Hot Rock, the critically-adored all-female trio dropped punk producer John Goodmanson for soundweaving Roger Mountenot and crafted fine-textured rock. Now Goodmanson is back at the desk as the Olympians (as in Olympia, Wash.) swagger back to the looser punk/surf/power pop sound of their earlier albums Call the Doctor...
...this aspect, the demise of Love's riot-grrl image is a step backwards for American women. There is no longer a viable image of American femininity in the media other than these pre-pubescent teen idols. Even popular women singers like Sarah McLaughlin have declined in the ratings as their teeny-bopper counterparts have topped the charts. Where have all the strong women gone? Many have gone the way of Love, and frankly, it's all of our loss...
