...Land has been airing a lot of old Angels episodes. I hadn't seen one since childhood. So the other day I tuned in, curious to know whether my liberation memories would match up with the actual product, especially now that I have de Beauvoir and Ferraro and riot grrl under my belt. The episode was called Target: Angels. Kelly (Jaclyn Smith), Sabrina (Kate Jackson) and Jill (Farrah Fawcett) are being shot at by an enemy of Charlie's. I am delighted to report that I could see what I once saw. Jill coaches a girls' basketball team; Kelly breaks...
...opening cut of Sleater-Kinney's new album All Hands on the Bad One, Corin Tucker shrieks "I gotta rock." So the grrl does what she's gotta do. On their last album, The Hot Rock, the critically-adored all-female trio dropped punk producer John Goodmanson for soundweaving Roger Mountenot and crafted fine-textured rock. But in the process of her transformation from druggie iconoclast to Hollywood hipster, has she betrayed her most fervent fans, young women...
...bitter taste of betrayal is still in some mouths. Love has not yet abandoned the band which first make her name in the industry, having recently come out with another hit album just last summer. While this bodes well for the future of riot grrl-ness, her original fans fear that Love has wandered (and stripped through) the world from New Zealand to Oregon and come home to Hollywood to roost...
...this aspect, the demise of Love's riot-grrl image is a step backwards for American women. There is no longer a viable image of American femininity in the media other than these pre-pubescent teen idols. Even popular women singers like Sarah McLaughlin have declined in the ratings as their teeny-bopper counterparts have topped the charts. Where have all the strong women gone? Many have gone the way of Love, and frankly, it's all of our loss...
