...Public Mistrust Re Michael Grunwald's piece on how Washington failed us: I'm neither Republican nor Democrat, and I am disgusted with both [Oct. 13]. Both presidential candidates want to blame Wall Street, and there is surely some merit to that. But the heart of the problem rests with Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, two quasi-government corporations. Despite several attempts by legislators to call attention to the impending crisis, lawmakers like Senator Christopher Dodd - the No. 1 recipient of campaign contributions from Fannie and Freddie - preached the soundness of these institutions. This is not a failure...

...loving, self-assured and self-deprecating--but his concern with honor is like a golden thread woven through his remarkable life of service. In the cover story of our special Republican Convention issue, McCain's abiding concern with honor is the prism through which James Carney and Michael Grunwald look at the Republican presidential nominee. Carney, our Washington bureau chief, has covered both of McCain's presidential campaigns. He first encountered McCain during the Arizona Senator's antitobacco crusade of 1997. "He basically allowed me into every meeting and strategy session he had on tobacco," he recalls. "His rule...

...Michael Grunwald says he lives in Miami Beach, which is a world unto itself [July 21]. We have lived in South Central Florida for 30 years and find it to be paradise--beautiful unpolluted beaches and water, responsible zoning and happy, smiling residents. The economic problems we experience here today are those of the whole country, not just Florida. Year-round we find "fun and sun in Florida" an apt description. Marion Denninger, VERO BEACH...

...Debate on Clean Energy While Michael Grunwald's article on the emerging ethanol industry was both chilling and truthful, it's damaging to demonize the global effort to develop clean fuels as "myth," "scam" and "hype" [April 7]. It is no myth that thousands of scientific teams are working feverishly to create biofuels such as ethanol, biodiesel and biobutanol from nonfood plants grown on land unsuitable for food production. We could not have landed on the moon without first launching at Kitty Hawk. We are getting better at this every day. Mark Beyer, Detroit...

...wrong to attribute a significant part of the increase in Amazon deforestation to biofuels, as Mr. Grunwald does. First, suggestions that Brazil is a major culprit in global warming are not supported by scientific facts or reliable statistics. Second, the growth rate of Brazilian emissions has been on the decline primarily because of decreasing rates of Amazon rain-forest deforestation, which is the main source of carbon emissions in Brazil, and increasing use of ethanol fuel. Furthermore, from 1970 to 2005 the use of ethanol in our energy mix has averted the emission of 644 million tons...
