Despite the daunting negotiations ahead, which optimists say will last at least two years, both sides showed a rare eagerness to make these talks succeed. If a pragmatic tone distinguished their formal speeches, a private meeting between Baker and Shevardnadze at the official residence of U.S. Ambassador Henry Grunwald plainly left the two statesmen in high spirits.
