STRAUSS: DER ROSENKAVALIER (London). In this historic 1954 performance of an endlessly ravishing opera, a master conductor (Erich Kleiber), superb singers (Maria Reining, Sena Jurinac and Hilde Gueden) and an outstanding orchestra (the Vienna Philharmonic) blend color, vitality and balance with intelligence and resonant beauty...

The gaudily exotic score boasts some sweetly melting arias, and the performance (with Hilde Gueden and Waldemar Kmentt as principals) is expert, but for the most part Giuditta is not much more than a barefoot Merry Widow...

...round out its imposing operatic catalogue. London has also released The Marriage of Figaro (4 LPs), with Hilde Gueden, Danco and Siepi, and the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Erich Kleiber, and The Magic Flute (3 LPs), with Gueden, Wilma Lipp, Simoneau and Berry, conducted by Karl Bohm. Both are first-rate performances and, as a bonus, the albums contain the complete musical scores...
