...Arshile Gorky who got right to the point. "If Picasso drips," he said, "I drip." That was in the late 1930s, a time when deciphering Picasso's intentions, getting inside his darting, catch-me-if-you-can progress, from Cubism to Neoclassicism, from Surrealism to Guernica, was an all-important matter to that small but crucial category of American artists who had no use for the approved manner of the moment, American Scene realism. Grant Wood's farm folk and Thomas Hart Benton's small-town cuties were fine, if you didn't care about what painting could be. Although...
Monday is market day in the Basque town of Guernica, as it was on the afternoon of April 26, 1937, when the Junkers JU52 bombers of the Luftwaffe's Condor Legion arrived. For three hours high-explosive and incendiary devices fell on the town, whose narrow streets were packed with villagers and peasants from the surrounding countryside. That collection of images is one of the highlights of the NGV's exhibition Picasso Love & War 1935-1945, in Melbourne...
...Traveling to many of the world's trouble spots, the artist has documented the atrocities of Bosnia, Somalia and Rwanda in a hyper-real mix of painting, drawing and diary-making. A typical Gittoes canvas, with its Goya-like grotesqueries, can make Picasso's Guernica look like a picnic. But on arriving in Iraq in 2003, the artist felt a new medium was required to capture the surreality of what he was experiencing. Meeting Baghdad's gangsta rap?spouting U.S. Marines, Gittoes was inspired to shoot the musical documentary Soundtrack to War (2004), in which mainly black soldiers sing straight...
