...died over 14 years. More bombs were dropped on that tiny country than were used by all sides in all of World War II. That's giving up? The lessons of Vietnam are many, but chief among them are that invading forces cannot subdue a native population fighting a guerrilla war; that Americans will not support endless costly wars of choice; and that humility, caution and planning are essential in military operations...
...part, the Israeli military is strengthening its border defenses and trying to figure out how to crush a guerrilla enemy that fires rockets from deep underground and uses villages and towns as a combat shield. The Israeli air force is retooling its planes for new, U.S.-made 600-pound 'bunker-buster' bombs. Israel also found out that its vaunted Merkava tanks were vulnerable to missile attack, and experts are now experimenting with a new radar device that tracks and shoots incoming projectiles in mid-air. That triumph that made Hizballah the most powerful faction in Lebanese politics, enabling it to trigger this summer's war with a cross-border raid into Israel and more recently threaten to topple Siniora's government...
Those aren't their only weapons. The U.N. watchdog report circulated to the Security Council last week says Syria has equipped and trained the ICU military. On July 27, the report says, "200 fighters from the ICU were transported by aircraft to Syria to undergo military training in guerrilla warfare." The report also says a Syrian plane delivered a "large quantity" of arms, including surface-to-air missiles, to the ICU in early September.
