...Chen Yunlin, the chairman of the Chinese organization in charge of Taiwan affairs, met with Ma at the Taipei Guest House on Thursday, where they exchanged gifts. Chen unfurled an elaborate scroll painting of a horse - the meaning of "Ma" in Chinese - and Ma gave Chen a ceramic vase with painted Taiwanese orchids. In the coming months, they'll also exchange furry ambassadors: two Chinese pandas for a Formosan serow and sika deer...

...most places, the picture inevitably has the feeling of both a rock-concert movie (with reaction shots of adoring fans, including one woman holding a "Hug me, Michael" sign) and Triumph of the Will (the central figure lands in a city, meets the locals, attends a rally with guest speakers, then wows the crowd himself). Among the guests are Celeste Zappala, the outspoken mother of a soldier killed in Iraq, and a cadre of antiwar diplomats. At some venues, famous musicians are on hand: Eddie Vedder, Joan Baez, Steve Earle and Tom Morello, ex of Rage Against the Machine...

...week before the balloting, I sat in the dining room of one of Washington's finest hotels and, eavesdropping madly, realized that my neighbors at every one of the adjoining tables were consumed by the vagaries of appointive politics - as I was, after my guest arrived. The game of turbocharged, Cabinet-level musical chairs is the autumnal version of the summer speculation about vice-presidential picks: lots of fun, but not very nourishing, and I'm not going to indulge in it here (O.K., maybe a little). There are bigger fish to fry, like what's the new President - Obama...
