Guggenheim, 88, last of the seven Guggenheim brothers who, with their father, a Swiss-born peddler of household knickknacks, ran a $25,000 investment in two Colorado silver mines into one of the world's largest fortunes; in Port Washington, N.Y. With earnings from his share in his family's international mining interests (Alaskan copper, Chilean nitrate, Bolivian tin), Solomon donated millions to charity (mostly anonymously), in 1947 gave some $4,000,000 to establish the fourth of the famed Guggenheim foundations† which supports Manhattan's avant-garde Museum of Non-Objective Painting...
