...talent. Take guitar god Carlos Santana, 52, whose relevance has dwindled since his 1970 hit Abraxas. Last year the Woodstock veteran signed with Arista. Davis refocused Santana's songs toward radio and teamed him with new stars like Lauryn Hill, enticing a new generation of fans to discover his flamboyant guitar playing. Santana is now enjoying a view he hasn't seen in two decades: his new album Supernatural sits in the Top 5 and has sold more than 2 million copies. "I only look for headliners," Davis says. "An artist has to be able to fulfill in person...

...spiritual hunger and empowerment gained from the three-year hiatus she took to raise a family. Etheridge's folk-rock roots come to the surface in this album on love and loss, consciousness and confusion, hope and reconciliation. The title track combines a powerful infusion of drums, bass and guitar--performed by co-producer and longtime touring guitarist John Shanks--with Etheridge's characteristic sultry leads and honest, truthful lyrics ("So you're having a breakdown/so you're losing your might/and I'm driving/and crying/unraveled/and flying/I'm coming to your breakdown tonight") that tear at your entire being...

A year later, I heard my first Beatles tape. I learned to play an electric guitar. After that 1986 concert, I formed a band and made rock my life...

...pasteurized crap. Simple as that. You get five numbskulls with seven-string guitars and fake dread-locks, and you know what, you've got a band? You put some goofy white boy in big baggy pants and take him out to the tattoo shop, you've got another band. You take two lazy fat-ass pieces of white trash from [lousy] Detroit and put clown makeup on them and you've got another band. It's not [really] music. I'm sorry, but you know what--I can get a seven string guitar, I can tune it down two steps...
