...Jazz guitarist Pat Metheny's soundtrack to A Map of the World, the upcoming film based on Jane Hamilton's book, falls somewhere in between. Certainly no innovation, but surely no tragedy, Metheny's compositions are no doubt appropriate. The main framework of the album is a variation on a theme, punctuated by less topical instrumentations, which include very literal motifs. An apt analogy would be to say that the artist has ceded to the architect. That is to say, Metheny has selflessly concealed his artistic biases to create a non-intrusive score for a film and not a masterpiece...
...opening band duty. The New York City band turned up the volume and cranked out a set of serious rock songs. Their songs were heavy on the drums and guitar, giving the show a much needed kick. And the songs were tuneful as well, with nice harmonies between the guitarist and bassist...
...Playing like a man possessed" may be a rock clich, but Poem Rocket's guitarist deserved the tag. He glared at the audience through fierce, bulging eyes, and at numerous times the veins on his head seemed ready to explode. He was certainly an intimidating presence on stage, but he became an even greater menace when during one song he jumped off the stage and stared various members of the audience down face to face as he shook a little shaker ball to the drummer and bassist's beat...
...showmanship, Poem Rocket had some experimental musical moments as well. At one point, the bassist took a drum stick and rubbed it along her bass strings, giving off a fuzzy hum that sounded not too bad. But their ultimate claim to fame lay with their spectacle of a guitarist...
...minus 1. All dressed in futuristic silver space suits, lu Cont walked out with Jo Reynolds, his good-looking blonde guitarist and proceeded to launch into a robotic dance. Perhaps it would be better described as a winking, ironic take on dancing: efforts to banish thoughts of that Volkswagen commercial where the guys dance to Styx's "Mr Roboto"(or my actual efforts in to do the same dance in the '80s) failed. In any case, it was the start of a show, all right. Lu Cont and Reynolds had chemistry and were having a laugh camping it up, shrugging...
