...nothing tops a velvet Elvis painting in terms of bizarre music-star folk art, but this is pretty good. To celebrate the 75th anniversary of HANK WILLIAMS' birth and the release of The Complete Hank Williams CD set, Mercury Records amassed a collection of folk art depicting the guitarist-singer. The exhibition includes such pieces as Lonesome Hank, above, painted on a rusty lawn chair, and Setting the Woods on Fire, below, both by Bob Gray; and Dark Hank, middle, by Todd Greene. And move over, Elvis--while on display in New York City, more than half the available pieces...
...suite at the Chateau Marmont. Tall, lean, with pale, muscular arms and bare, nicked-up legs. She clears her throat as she strolls in, clearing it in a louder-than-she-needed-to, public-announcement way. Courtney Love: head turner, showstopper, superstar. Her band mates in her group Hole--guitarist Eric Erlandson and bassist Melissa Auf der Maur--have been waiting, relaxing on couches. Hole has a terrific new CD out, Celebrity Skin, the band's third release. The group has gone through many changes since it formed in 1990--musical changes, philosophical changes, personnel changes. The band's last...
...Guitarist JK has created a terrific background album: something you can slip on as you sit in traffic, wash dishes, spend time with your significant other. This is smooth jazz with a dab of soul: most of the songs are instrumentals featuring JK's pleasant if unadventurous guitar stylings. You pull over in traffic, put down the dishes, cuddle closer and just listen...
This is the bayou of Jesse Peretz '90, director of the new movie First Love, Last Rites. Peretz is probably best known as the former bass guitarist of the band The Lemonheads, and since having left the group, he has achieved a considerable amount of success, directing a number of music videos and commercial spots for MTV as well as a few short films. True, First Love, Last Rites is his first full-length feature, but the movie is by no means a rookie effort. Indeed, the film serves as a vehicle through which Peretz displays the most interesting ability...
...this certainly solved the problem of sound (or created more problems, depending on how you look at the situation), it also raised many questions, the most predominant one being, quite simply, "Why?" Amos built her style and reputation around her unique and passionate keyboarding skills. Why are a lead guitarist, a bassist, and a drummer so necessary now? Was it to better showcase the songs off her latest album, from the choirgirl hotel, which does not contain as many all-acoustic songs as her previous albums have? Or is it precisely because Amos now wants to play in arenas like...
