...MORELLO Rock guitarist, Rage Against the Machine
Musically speaking, Plumtree is always shifting, adapting their techniques to produce new flavors and textures. In the new album's opening song, "Tropical," Carla Gillis (lead guitarist and singer) declares, "I'm sick of your morals, I'm sick of them, My mother told me what to do today!" Yet behind this repetition, two guitarists piece together a surf-rock riff, while the bass (Amanda Braden) roots the song's fervent movement with hard-driving chords. In "The Phone, the Phone," sisters Lynette and Carla blend two different vocal styles and come up with a wonderfully complementary sound. One sister...
...Walkin' After Midnight, a song made famous by country star Patsy Cline. And in a nod to her French roots, Peyroux delivers a vibrant version of Edith Piaf's La Vie en Rose. Dreamland features an impressive cast of supporting players. Pianist Chestnut provides restrained invention on Reckless Blues, guitarist Vernon Reid (formerly of the rock band Living Colour) enlivens Muddy Water, and up-and-coming jazz stars Marcus Printup (trumpet) and James Carter (saxophone) provide lift to several other tracks...

The CD also has a song called I Need You (That Thing You Do), similar to the first tune but even more engaging. If released as a follow-up, it could have...
While some might argue that it's unseemly, if not a bit screwy, for a major-label band (Rage Against the Machine is on Epic, which is owned by Sony) with an Ivy League guitarist to decry networks, millionaires and capitalism, Morello says there's no contradiction. "There's no more or less irony," he says firmly, "than in buying a Noam Chomsky book at Barnes & Noble." And if Joe Hill were alive today--who knows?--he might well be on MTV right alongside Rage Against the Machine...
