...tanker's helmet, whether John Kerry's favorite sports were too precious (like wind-surfing), whether Al Gore's debate sighs over his opponent's simple obfuscations were patronizing. Bill Clinton was the lone Democratic master of low-information signaling - a love of McDonald's and other assorted big-gulp appetites gave him credibility that even trumped his evasion of military service...

...been concentrating on her PSP pauses her game and fixes me with an intense stare. I feel a frisson of excitement but look away first."Dog farts! This guy's shifty. He's spoken for three minutes without saying a thing. Keep an eye on him." I gulp, she has obviously mistaken my occasional blinking (caused, I protest, by tiredness) for a sign of guilt...

Republicans tend not to like people like McCain: too wild, too willing to work with Senators like Ted Kennedy (gasp!) and Russ Feingold (gulp!) on legislation. Then again, what are the options? There is no plausible front-runner. Each of the Republicans is flawed and flailing. The despair and hilarity as the various candidates try to squeeze into the conservative base's straitjacket, like the stepsisters struggling to fit into Cinderella's slipper, have been the gaudiest political show...
