...Captain Trash, Thomas Derrah amazes. Trash looks like a gum-chewing heroin addict, but in his escape from prison (the unbelievable number "Rat Seraban") and trip to Russia ("Russia's a big motha," he says), he proves he is more than just a whining yesman. "I think we should rip off their necks and piss down their throats," he suggests matter-of-factly. Derrah has never been more funny...
Meanwhile, the aging systems continue to deteriorate. "We are holding some of this equipment together with bubble gum and baling wire," says Pete Acadeno, a technician at New York's terminal radar approach control. Such heavily trafficked air centers as New York and Chicago rely on the IBM 9020E, a mainframe computer of 1960s vintage. Unlike modern computers, with their tidy array of microchips, this dinosaur is stuffed with thousands and thousands of feet of wire. "The technicians tell us the wires are so brittle they sometimes break when you just touch them," says Mark Scholl, president of the Chicago...

In the past decade, producers of live shows merged foodomania with Disney-style theme attractions (Medieval Times, King Henry's Feast) to create that curiosity known as environmental theater. Song of Singapore was set in a lavish nightclub in 1941. For Tony 'n' Tina's Wedding you went to church, then to a restaurant. When Tamara...
Smokers may have an easier time quitting if Dr. C. Everett Koop can convince a Food and Drug Administration advisory panel to make Nicorette gum available without a prescription. The former Surgeon General told the committee today that nicotine gum has proven its effectiveness in helping smokers quit. "If anyone can convince the FDA to do this, it's probably Koop, who is still seen as America's doctor," notes health care writer Janice Castro. "Until now, nicotine gum has been controlled for fear that users would reinforce their addiction to nicotine." At today's meeting, several medical experts said...
