...made some memorable movies, including Gilda and Miss Sadie Thompson. But the final years were awful. She abandoned her last film role in 1972. Eight years later, she was diagnosed as having Alzheimer's disease, and Yasmin cared for her until her death in 1987. Leaming's prose can gush ("the incomparable Hermes Pan," "the fabulous Eartha Kitt") and regularly descends to write-by-the-numbers cliche. But the material is poignant, another reminder of the chasm that can exist between public images and private pain...
Most of the time, however, the conversation on The Arsenio Hall Show is just what you'd expect from a talk show that bills itself as a party: lots of small talk, much of it boring. Hall's show-biz gush rivals Merv Griffin's or Rivers' at their most unctuous. His treatment of guests is overly deferential, his questions stultifying softballs. There could be no happier outcome for the cold war than for us to win it and for old cold warriors to face...
...captain with too much alcohol in his blood turns over command of his tanker to an unqualified third mate. The mate shouts contradictory orders to the helmsman and eventually impales the vessel on a reef, causing millions of gallons of oil to gush from the mangled hull. Companies that boasted they had the equipment and manpower in place for a quick cleanup turn out to have hardly anything available and lose irreplaceable days getting into action. Then, almost predictably, the calm weather gives way to high winds that render their efforts ineffective...
