...Gotham crime, sludge and cynicism. The mayor is a do-nothing schlemiel ("Don't tell me - I don't wanna know"), and the hijacked passengers aren't so scared that they can't give a lot of lip back to their captors. The transit hierarchy is clogged with wise guys. "What the hell do they expect for their lousy 35 cents?" one executive says of the subway hostages. "To live forever?" Another MTA veteran boldly and unwisely struts down the tracks toward the kidnapped train. "Why don't you go grab a goddam aeroplane like everybody else?" he shouts...

...Hummer on. Weighing in at a sedentary 220 lb. (100 kg), he's playing a desk jockey burdened by the usual bureaucratic bull plus a scandal that has put his career in the commode. (In the original film, Matthau rarely rose to anger; he was a weary, wily guy, just doing his job. This time it's personal.) ...crowded marketplace. To make sure, I went to one of the 440 movie theaters charging $20 to see a simulcast of Beck's sold-out show from Kansas City, Mo. He opened by looking at the camera and saying, "I particularly want to say hi to the guy from TIME magazine in Burbank, likely all by himself." Which I was. ...With ornate geometrical tattoos covering his body, Tim is not the kind of guy you'd expect to wax poetically about a 19th century French painter. But then Hiva Oa is not your run-of-the-mill tourist island. With just 2,000 lucky inhabitants and one hotel, it's a place where the sight of a boy washing his horse in the surf on an empty black-sand beach, or copra drying in someone's front yard, is common. Hiva Oa is the second largest island in the Marquesas, a distinct group of 14 isles within French Polynesia, located...
