...small-arms ammunition, 2,000 Mauser rifles, 1,000 submachine guns and 500 Ibs. of medical supplies from North Viet Nam, Communist China, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Russia and-oddly enough-Japan. The ship itself was built in China, and aboard it were found a Jan. 23 copy of a Haiphong newspaper, North Vietnamese navigational charts as well as snapshots, letters and medical records of North Vietnamese soldiers...
Where? A number of future North Vietnamese targets stand out: Highway 12 to Laos, a newly built guerrilla turnpike; the military-industrial complex of Vinh, where the Hanoi railway ends; a big rail bridge at Tanhhoa, spanning a deep ravine; the Hanoi-Haiphong highway; petroleum storage tanks in Haiphong; the rail line entering North Viet Nam from China at Dongdang. Last week the first 922 Vietnamese refugees boarded a ship in Bangkok for the five-day trip to Haiphong and North Viet...
...savage techniques of imperialism's unhappy past. In 1945, when Algerians killed some 100 French in a local uprising in the Constantine area, the French retaliated by bombing and strafing towns, killed some 20,000 Algerians before calling a halt; in 1946 French warships and artillery bombarded Haiphong, killing some 10,000 Vietnamese; in 1947 the French wiped out entire villages in putting down a revolt in Madagascar, killing some 40,000 men, women and children...
