Ellen H. Takata '98 creates equally beguiling ink drawings of young Japanese girls in and out of drag. "Actress (lkki Haruka)" features fluid renderings of two head shots taken from popular Japanese trading cards of an adolescent female theater troupe. At the top of the image, a short-haired boyish actress smiles seductively at the viewer. Below we see the same woman dressed in a tuxedo jacket and bow tie, her hair coifed in a pompadour which would have made the young Sinatra proud. Yet apart from her obvious male dress, she appears somehow more feminine, wearing eye-liner, mascara...

...like the real writers. You take a blank page and impose a structure on something. I know I can't do that because I was an English major--I've written papers for years and I'm just not good at it. It drives me nuts--I pull my hair out in front of the computer watching the cursor blink...

...high school. But because Jeremy wasn't a troublemaker, says Rick, the guidance counselors never noticed him. The more Leslie tried to interest her children in her idea of small-town pastimes--board games in the parlor, gingerbread houses at Christmas--the more Jeremy wanted to dye his hair purple and turn up his stereo. Wilmington is as saturated with pop culture as the next place; Jeremy's interests ran to rap music and cartoon art, and he dropped out during his senior year. Now 20, he has earned a GED and is studying at a local college...

...even more uncannily resembles the goofy portrayal of Bob Evans that Hoffman did as a goof while filming 1976's Marathon Man. The infamous improv scenes, which have been enjoyed in a few select home screening rooms throughout Hollywood, show Hoffman, right, in a bathrobe with slicked-back hair, big glasses, a stammer and a filthy mouth, pretending he is a ruined, emasculated Evans in 1996. And the President in 1996, according to Hoffman-as-Evans? Warren Beatty...

Benjamin Evett is perfect as the borderline-scummy Pentheus. He and his arrogant band of secret service agents, complete with slicked hair and alligator-green suits (and, yes, sandals), really make it easy to hate this pompous leader who mocks his own grandfather. By the time Pentheus succumbs to Dionysos's offer of a chance to watch the Bacchae, and shamefully puts on a dress as the Maenads hoot and catcall, the audience feels little pity towards him. His imminent doom is not a tragedy; it is simply a foolish leader's receiving his just desserts. Yet during the drag...
