...Bernard Haitink, 31, will soon take over as one of two permanent conductors of Amsterdam's famed old Concertgebouw Orchestra. Haitink has guest-conducted widely throughout Europe, is best known for his coolly controlled readings of Beethoven and Bruckner. A childhood violin student at the Amsterdam Conservatory, Haitink "felt the need to have a broader instrument," studied conducting, was soon picked as assistant conductor of the Dutch Radio Philharmonic.
