...George Wallace's smashing victory in the Florida Primary outdated, undermined, or reversed several of these black strategies. His victory not only thrust Hubert Humphrey far to the right of the position he held in his halcyon days, but it also made it more difficult for many blacks to believe that they could afford to withhold their support any longer from the more liberal Democratic contenders in hopes of getting more for that support later. If Wallace built momentum unchecked in the primaries, later might be too late...
...halcyon days as Harlem's Congressman, Adam Clayton Powell Jr. epitomized the rakishly handsome aristocrat who lives and loves with lofty disdain for what Powell called "picayune matters of personal morality." He often overstepped the bounds of good taste, but for most of his 35-year career as the black world's premier preacher, politician and playboy, Powell was a flamboyant symbol of success and the good life that most of his 430,000 largely black constituents could only dream about. He openly flouted the rules set down by whites, drove expensive foreign cars, dined at exclusive restaurants...

Back in the halcyon haze of the '20s and '30s maisons de tolérance such as the Sphinx, the Chabanais and above all the One-Two-Two (for 122 Rue de Provence) were Parisian tourist attractions outranking the Louvre and Napoleon's tomb. During World War II, however, the bordellos disintegrated in quality-the Gestapo used them as intelligence sources-and in 1946, Marthe Richard, a municipal council member, led a successful campaign to outlaw...
Like an aging roue looking back on halcyon days, the House Un-American Activities Committee has tried to sanitize its image. It changed its name to the House Internal Security Committee in 1969 and made abortive attempts to revive lost vigor (convening hearings on such left-wing groups as the S.D.S.). But last week, in the best oldtime "I have a list" form, the committee released a compilation of "radical" speakers who have spread leftist rhetoric over American campuses during the past two years...
