Earlier this month, James Cox, regional director of VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America), announced in Austin that two of Laredo's 20 VISTA volunteers have been dismissed for "immaturity and irresponsiblity." Neither Cox nor his field representative, William Hale, would give any further explanation. Neal Birnbaum and Douglass Ruhe, both from Chicago and both 22 years old, believe they were released because of their associations with a Mexican-American activist group called VIDA (Voices in Democratic Action...

According to Birnbaum and Ruhe, Hale had said they could help VIDA in its efforts to organize restaurant and cafeteria workers in the Laredo area, but warned that the work "would involve certain risks." In other words, they were given to understand that, as representatives of the poverty program, VISTA volunteers should avoid too intimate an association with a group such as VIDA, which has militant overtones and which, therefore, is basically unfriendly to the Laredo powers-that...

Both Brown and his former State Director of Finance, Hale Champion, who is now a fellow of the Kennedy Institute, stress the effectiveness of Reagan's "totally managed campaign." They predict that image building through the mass media will catch on nationally, and they worry about what this will mean to other political pros who may have neither youthful looks nor sex appeal. Always a party loyalist, Brown insists that Democratic candidates...

Under Robert Finch's direction, an obviously dedicated cast makes The Crucible superior to most House productions. It shares many of the common faults of House shows: the props are conspicuously modern, the written affidavits invariably blank sheets of typing paper; Reverend Hale enters the Paris house with an armload of books fresh from Widener Library with the little white stickers on the bindings to prove...

...unmodulated one-note performances. If an actor happens to hit the right note, as in the case of Tim Hall's paranoid Danforth, the performance can be extremely effective. But in the first two acts, Steve Hill as the nasty Reverend Parris and John Brady as the humane Reverend Hale might just as well be playing each other's parts, or David Blocker's part as Putnam, for all the difference between them. Brady has several good moments later in the play, but most of them when he isn't talking. Only Vernon Blackman manages to convey something over...
