Editor Nycop hurried. Within 18 months the evening tabloid Expressen rocketed into the black, and it has since come to soothe Publisher Bonnier's nerves as the largest paper in all Scandinavia (circ. 370,000). Expressen is hale because it is hearty. Its formula: a smorgasbord of culture and sensationalism enlivened by flashy picture play and bellowing headlines. Last week, Expressen outdid itself, produced 600,000 copies of a 64-page issue, biggest in Scandinavian history...
...Straus report is bound to run into considerable opposition from the U.S. Treasury, which announced that it will fight any tax-easing rules that might further unbalance the budget. Yet Straus has strong support for his proposals both on Capitol Hill and at the White House. Louisiana Democrat Hale Boggs, author of a House bill to cut corporate taxes on foreign earnings from 52% to 38%, promised a "warm welcome" from Congress for the report. And from Administration officials came word that the White House will endorse much...
...days after the U.S. Navy sent a boarding party from the radar picket ship U.S.S. Roy O. Hale to the Soviet trawler Novorossisk in the North Atlantic to investigate the cause of breaks in five transatlantic submarine cables (TIME, March 9), the Russians lodged a predictable protest. From the U.S. last week went a cool reply that 1) dismissed the protest as unfounded, 2) pointedly documented the "strong presumption" that the Russian trawler had indeed...
...Hale as could be on his 85th birthday, salty, shaggy Poet Robert Frost huffed lamely at a birthday cake, tackled the inevitable press conference. "Someone said to me that New England's in decay," rasped Frost. "But I said the next President is going to be from Boston. That doesn't sound like decay." Who, he was asked, might that be? "Can't you figure that out? It's a Puritan named (John) Kennedy." Aha, but did Frost want the boyish Senator to win? "Anything from Boston is all right with...
Sabin-type vaccine got a different type of test in Singapore when it was hit by a polio epidemic last August. British-trained Professor James Hale decided to work with Sabin's Type II vaccine. All the polio occurring was of Type I. If any Type II disease showed up, it would be almost certainly due to faulty vaccine. But while Type II vaccine is supposed to give 100% protection only against Type II disease, it is claimed to give about 60% protection against Type I also. As hoped, Type I disease began to decline sharply...
