Missing out on the Iowa festivities this year: Arizona Senator John McCain, who will ring in the New Year with a series of town hall meetings in New Hampshire, squeezed in between two Iowa trips. Congressman Dennis Kucinich will also be absent; he plans to hold a party in New Hampshire. As for Congressman Ron Paul's campaign, several calls and emails to his camp went unanswered. And former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani will be celebrating in - where else? - New York City...
...Manhattan-Christmas industrial complex dates back at least three-quarters of a century. Seventy-five years ago this week, Radio City Music Hall opened, and the following December this grand movie-and-vaudeville house unveiled its first Christmas extravaganza, staged between showings of a film. At first there were just two scenes: the March of the Wooden Soldiers, featuring the dancing corps of Rockettes, and an elaborate retelling of the Nativity story and the journey of the Magi. "My friends, I learned a lesson," McCain told the crowd. "I got the message." Though he continues to support a path...

Still, she stood out as a powerful figure in the dining hall of Elliot House, where she lived, and she displayed a passion for international politics that went beyond the antiwar rhetoric that passed for political discourse in those days. Later at Oxford, where we both ended up as grad students, she became even more intensely political. The summit of student politics there is the presidency of the Oxford Union, the venerable debating society, and she viewed it as her mission...
