...lulled them to sleep with Washington Irving's drolly orotund style. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is still a bedtime staple in tonier households, and with its Headless Horseman hurling a grimacing pumpkin at the head of Ichabod Crane, the story helped create the American giddying-up of Halloween as a funny fright night. But like so many old fables, Sleepy Hollow is chiefly remembered in its Disney version. That 1958 cartoon short, a genial mix of comedy and anxiety, took its tone from the voice of its narrator: Bing Crosby. A lulling, a chuckle, then a little scare...
...total Tim Burton experience. So for this end-of-the-century parable (it's set in 1799), he imports the bats from Batman, the jack-o'-lantern from Nightmare Before Christmas and, as Ichabod Crane, Johnny Depp from Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood. Instead of the bright Halloween hues of the Disney version, Burton gives his film a swankly, dankly desaturated color scheme. The story, set like Scissorhands and Batman Returns at Christmas, is about Jack Skellington, the ruler of Halloweentown and his suffering what amounts to a mid-life crisis. Upon discovering Christmastown, Jack believes that this is a way to re-invigorate Halloween, and he misguidedly tries to supplant Santa Claus, if just for one year. The movie was a success, given its low production costs and soon garnered a cult following that rivaled any of Burton's previous films...
...crafty. Even me, a long-time proponent of anti-Man doctrine, can succumb to the wily charm of The Man. Around Halloween an old friend from high school managed to get me into Starbucks, the very den of The Man. And as I paid for my coffee, I saw it. A cute little teddy bear, all dressed up for Halloween in a black velvet skeleton costume. His acrylic eyes, his fuzzy synthetic fur--it was all too much. I forked over the cash and brought the bear home. What easier way for the Man to gain access to my home...
...watch all seven movies in the Halloween series, set aside...
