Microwave ovens are fast and easy, but they can't broil, caramelize, steam, grill or roast food. The new Wolf/FlashBake 120 by Quadlux in Fremont, Calif., cooks nearly as fast as a microwave but runs on halogen lights controlled by a computer chip. Infrared rays brown the food while visible and near visible light penetrates and cooks it. ...lighting is as effective as it is purported to be, fluorescent lamps should be installed in all the Houses as soon as possible. After all, if the college provided adequate lighting, students wouldn't have to buy halogens in the first place. Until students offer their feedback on the forthcoming lamps, however, it may be too early to celebrate--and still unrealistic to ban halogen lamps...
