DIED. Philippe Halsman, 73, one of the world's best-known portrait photographers; after a brief illness; in New York City. Born to Jewish parents in Latvia, Halsman spent ten years as a successful fashion photographer in Paris before fleeing to the U.S. in 1940, one step ahead of the Nazis. In New York, he became a frequent contributor to Look, the Saturday Evening Post and LIFE, for which he did more covers (101) than any other photographer. ...HALSMAN: In Paris, my life was more relaxed and pleasant than here. The tempo was slower, the deadlines were less deadly. Here I learned that often you have to sacrifice your own private life in order to be successful in photography. This kind of work is nerve-racking and stressful. Periods of feverish activity alternate with periods of exhaustion and recovery. If I could relive my life, I would try to work less for others and more for myself...
