...Israel nobody likes a loser. And however much Olmert's media advisers try to spin it, Israel's war in Lebanon was bungled: the Israelis failed to destroy Hizballah's leadership or even halt its barrage of rockets, and 159 Israelis died in the conflict. As a result, the presence of the reservists on Olmert's doorstep is more than an eyesore. Protests by army reservists--practically every Israeli home has one--tend to gather momentum. And this movement is being joined by families of soldiers killed in the brawl with Hizballah. All that has sent Olmert's political stock...
...sweltering summer of 2006, New Orleans' anxious tourism industry could use a truckload of the stuff. Hurricane Katrina brought the city's multi-billion convention and tourism industry to a dead halt. Meetings and conventions that had been scheduled years ahead of time cancelled, along with the hundreds of thousands of attendees that would have filled hotel rooms and restaurants. For months, the few casual tourists who showed up were almost exclusively families of FEMA contractors and construction workers. A number of cultlike, pseudo-Christian offshoots have sprung...
...Gates and former President Bill Clinton all highlighted new prevention techniques in the opening days of the conference. These include the development of microbicides, oral drugs to prevent HIV infection, and even male circumcision. There still isn't enough evidence yet that proves any of these strategies can actually halt the spread of the disease, but they are promising enough to earn new infusions of research dollars and scientists' time. This of course doesn't mean that the traditional prevention approaches - Abstain, Be Faithful and Use condoms, - shouldn't still be a cornerstone of any responsible HIV-AIDS program...
...Unfortunately Arkansas record cannot yet be compared to trends in the rest of the nation in a definitive way. New national figures on child obesity rates, noted Dr. Thompson, aren't due out until 2007. If they show a continued rise, compared to what appears to be a screeching halt in Arkansas, the rest of the nation might want to take heed...
