...next elections could end up being smaller parties at the fringes of mainstream politics, with polls indicating that the anti-immigrant Freedom Party of Geert Wilders might take second place. Wilders has described Islam as a fascist religion and has called for the banning of the Koran and a halt on immigration from Muslim countries - all policies likely to create new frictions with the Muslim world and even alienate the Netherlands from its European allies. If Wilders were to be part of a future government, it could usher in a crisis of credibility in Dutch politics, says Ko Colijn from...

...Clinton's first two years in office, the Gingrich Republicans learned that the vicious circle works. While filibusters were occasionally broken, they also brought much of Clinton's agenda to a halt, and they made Washington look pathetic. In one case, GOP Senators successfully filibustered changes to a 122-year-old mining act, thus forcing the government to sell roughly $10 billion worth of gold rights to a Canadian company for less than $10,000. At one point, delivery of produce on the country's northern borders ground to a halt. The Prime Minister has appealed to the farmers' sense of patriotism, but a long season of strikes is almost a certainty; state employees have a 24-hour protest planned for Feb. 10. India's answer to that question seems to be slightly different to China's. Just last week, India's Supreme Court ordered French cement firm Lafarge to halt limestone mining in the country's northeast. India's environment watchdog had granted Lafarge permission to mine in forestland there, but critics of the company's operations have alleged that the company misrepresented facts in their application. (Lafarge is due to respond to those allegations in a court hearing next month). Those opposed to the mining project also say that deforestation has led to a severe change in rainfall patterns...
