That is the question that vexes travelers seeking air tickets--buy, or wait in hope of a price drop? Thanks to computer scientist Oren Etzioni, an answer may be just a few mouse clicks away. Etzioni's site Farecast.com original name was, of course, Hamlet--provides the lowest fare on a route, a 90-day price history and, using a novel predictive algorithm, a tip to "buy now" or "wait," along with a figure indicating how confident Farecast is in its advice. (Flyers buy directly from the airlines.) Boston and Seattle are currently the only searchable points of origin...
...United Nations peacekeepers (known by their acronym of UNIFIL) deployed along Lebanon's border with Israel describe the area as an Israeli free-fire zone, with any vehicle traveling along the roads at risk. On Friday, 16 residents of the tiny border hamlet of Marwahine, 12 miles from the coast, were killed when an Israeli helicopter rocketed their convoy, destroying two vehicles as they fled for the relative safety of Tyre. The next day, a UNIFIL relief column which was attempting to rescue beleaguered residents of Marwahine and nearby villages came under Israeli shellfire, with 12 155mm rounds exploding nearby...

In the escarpment hamlet of Shomera, Israelis like Gabriel Peretz, the owner of a bed-and-breakfast, can do little more than brace for the next attack. "The situation is very bad," he says, his sentences punctuated by the sound of Israeli artillery fire, a crack-boom followed by a lingering zing of the outgoing...
...Union soldiers in Irwinville, Georgia finally caught up with and arrested him. Three weeks later, General Smith's forces in Texas surrendered; and on June 23, the Cherokee chief and Confederate general Stand Watie, aware of Smith's surrender, accepted the inevitable. He galloped into the tiny Indian Territory hamlet of Fort Towson-in today's Oklahoma-and surrendered his battalion of Cherokee, Seminole and Osage Indians to Union forces. The Confederacy had officially become a lost cause...
...take a moment to thank the city of Wurzburg, Germany, for improving the lives of so many people around the world. No, this Bavarian hamlet of 130,000 isn't home to BMW, or host of a World Cup soccer match over the next month. But in 1895, a University of Wurzburg physicist named Wilhelm Roentgen discovered a form of electromagnetic radiation called the X ray, helping millions upon millions of sickened, frustrated patients cure what ails them. And over a century later, the city produced a blond, shaggy, 7-foot jump shooter named Dirk Nowitzki, helping countless sickened, frustrated...
