Despite such caveats, Olmos is proud of the generally high quality of the current Hispanic-themed films and looks forward to the day when Hispanics will be contending for classic roles, playing a Hamlet or a Stanley Kowalski. "Images are changing," he says. "There are more opportunities for Hispanics now, even more than two years...

Like any Hollywood animal, Olmos thinks on a grand scale, in broad, confident strokes. It is not inconceivable that he might play Hamlet or Kowalski. Or he might take on heroes like Coriolanus or Willy Loman. But consider this option: suppose he decided to develop a movie, Spielberg-style, about a Hispanic family in the suburbs, coping the American way. Dismayed, the Holy See ordered him not to ordain any of his seminarians. When he defiantly went ahead and did so in 1976, Pope Paul VI forbade the Archbishop to administer the sacraments. He ignored that injunction as well...

...compromise did not take into account a new, more solemn controversy. Last year a local physician noticed an unusually high number of cancer-related deaths in the tiny riverside hamlet of Hartford (pop. 300), whose people have always been accustomed to eating fish from the Pigeon River. In May, after EPA tests detected tiny traces of cancer-causing dioxin in fish from the Pigeon, the survivors of one husband and wife, who died of cancer within a month of ! each other, filed a $6 million wrongful-death suit against Champion. The dioxin controversy may tempt Cocke County to take...
